Iyengar Yoga Classes

Beginners:
This class is suitable for students new to Iyengar Yoga, continuing beginners and students who want to focus on the fountation of the practice.  The focus is on fundamental postures and actions within standing poses, seated poses, twists and forward-bending before attempting more challenging poses.  Many types of props such as belts, blocks, and blankets are used to help stay longer in postures and improve the alignment of the body.

Mixed Level
Classes are more intensive than at Beginners level and you will be introduced to a wider variety of asanas.  There is a strong emphasis on detail, precision, and alignment in the posture and breath to gain strength, mobility, and stability. Inversions such as shoulderstand are taught. Props such as bricks and chairs and the wall are used to help stay longer in postures and to improve the alignment of the body. Students progress at their own pace.

Level 2
In this level 2 class you should be familiar with standing poses and will be doing a wide variety of poses that change from week to week. You will refine, and expand upon what is taught at level 1. Sirsasana (headstand), Full Arm Balance and Backbends are all introduced. Deeper twistings and forward extensions and variatsion in the familiar shoulderstand are explored.  You will be offered guidance and additional options and poses as needed.  This calss has some chanting at the beginning of the class.

Level 1:
Classes are a little more intensive than at Beginners level and you will be introduced to a wider variety of asanas.    The focus is still on the fundamental postures and actions within standing poses, seated poses, twists, and forward bending, according to the students' ability. There is a strong emphasis on detail, precision, and alignment in the posture and breath to gain strength, mobility and stability.

What to expect:

Sara teaching style is clear and informed.  Her weekly classes are always varied, and blend a strong and steady alignment based practice, with slower restorative poses and always includes pranayama and deep rest.  She ensures that each student’s needs are met in a safe and comfortable environment. Sara uses props to help students to deepen their practice, support during rest or to help students get into poses that otherwise might not be possible.

I now go to Sara's Thursday night class, on recommendation from my physio, and she is the best yoga teacher ever! I love how the iyengar yoga she teaches and the way she teaches it is so helpful in getting the right alignment and support with the use of props too, so everyone can do what their body is able to do.

"Even in simple asanas, one is experiencing the three levels of quest: the external quest, which brings firmness of the body; the internal quest, which brings steadiness of intelligence; and the innermost quest, which brings benevolence of spirit." - BKS Iyengar
